In September 2009, around 50.0000 protesters marched on Conakry, Guinea’s capital. The protest march was fueled by the indication that junta leader Captain Moussa Dadis Camara would break his pledge not to run in the next presidential vote scheduled for January 2010. The government had already banned any form of protests until October 2, and when the demonstrators gathered in a large stadium, the security forces opened fire on them. At least 157 demonstrators were killed.
